Zaid Al-Ars

Zaid Al-Ars is an associate professor in the Delft University of Technology, where he leads the research and education activities of the Accelerated Big Data Systems group. His work focuses on increasing the efficiency of big data applications by addressing their bottlenecks and proposing optimized solution alternatives for system performance, memory, power, reliability, etc. His research interests include:

  • Analysis and development of heterogeneous computing systems to accelerate big data applications such as healthcare, analytics and AI
  • Methods for application domain analysis and mapping to appropriate heterogeneous architectures (CPU, GPU, FPGA)
  • Design and optimization of interconnect solutions to improve system performance and relieve data transfer bottlenecks
  • Design, characterization and test process improvement for heterogeneous computing systems

Zaid is also a co-founder of a couple of big data analytics startups. Teratide, a high-tech startup focusing on reducing the energy consumption of analytics in data centers, and Bluebee, a high-tech startup focusing on the intersection between the fields of cloud computing, high-performance computing and genomics applications. He also worked and collaborated with various tech industry heavyweights, such as Siemens, Infineon, Philips and IBM, and serves on the advisory board of a number of high-tech startups. Zaid received numerous awards in recognition for his research contribution, such as the IBM Faculty Award and the Xilinx Research Grant. He is regularly invited to give talks on big data technology and commercialization both in industry and academia. Zaid has a long and successful history managing and executing industrial projects at the national, European as well as the international level. He has two patents and published more than 200 peer-reviewed publications.
